If you look up ‘how to choose a niche topic’ in the search engines, chances are, you’re going to be bombarded with so much contradictory information and left confused about where and how to start.
Well, I don’t intend to add to your confusion through this post. All I want to do is to give you a simple guide to choosing a topic for your niche blog.
Let me start by saying there is a huge difference between blogging for dollars and blogging due to passion. Your passion may not always be profitable but you’ve got to strike a balance between passion and profitability to run a successful blog. Seriously, your passion can do with a little bit of profit. I seem to be saying too much here but all I’m driving at is that, you find a way to drive your blog topic with passion and profitability.
How to Choose a Niche Topic for Your Blog
You can choose a topic based on personal experiences. If you successfully quit smoking, you can start a blog to teach others how to achieve the same result. This was exactly what Patrick Meninga did 4 or so years back when he recovered from alcohol addiction. He started spiritualriver.com, a blog through which he was sharing self-help tips with alcohol addicts. His hard work paid off when an alcohol treatment center bought his site for a whopping $200,000!
You can also choose a topic based on what you’re passionate about. Like I’m passionate about wealth creation and I write about it. Closely related to this is choosing a topic based on your profession. For instance, a tax auditor can choose to blog about tax and sundry issues.
But, if you say you don’t have passion for any topic, I want to say don’t look for passion. Just have passion to learn and flow with any niche you have chosen. If you have the passion to learn continuously, you can choose any of your favorite topics. By increasing your knowledge in that area, you can then deliver great and solid content. I can say this is very true in my own online business as I have a successful quit smoking blog even though I have never smoked in my life!
I don’t know how cigarette tastes in the mouth, neither have I gone through a smoking cessation process, with all its’ nasty withdrawal symptoms, but every day, I’m able to post solid content that gets thousands of smokers intending to quit to my site. How is that possible? I’ve committed to continuously learning about stop smoking and delivering great content on my site.
Even though I have just relayed my own experience, I know you still want to know if having passion to learn can help you succeed on a blog whose topic you’re not passionate about. You also want to know if you can write consistently, without any break and I say yes to both questions. I believe your problem, really, is not that of passion. It’s more of fear and you have to find a way to eliminate your fear to choose a topic you’re not passionate about.
Today, you will just choose one topic and affirm to yourself “I shall learn about a topic to become a proficient and profitable blogger”.
